DuPont
Postdoctoral Fellowship Named
David S. Ginger, Jr. has been named the 2001-02
DuPont Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Nanotechnology. Originally
from Centerville, Ohio, Dr. Ginger received B.S. degrees in Chemistry
and Physics from Indiana University with honors and highest distinction.
He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, University
of Cambridge, U.K. in July 2001. His noteworthy honors include the British
Marshall Scholarship, the NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship, the NSF Graduate
Research Fellowship, and the MRS Graduate Student Gold Award.
Dr. Ginger's current research includes using dip-pen nanolithography to
generate nanoscale biological templates on semiconductor surfaces, probing
the fundamental optical and electronic properties of hybrid bio-inorganic
nanostructures, and creating new biomedical sensors through the rational
design and understanding of biologically-inspired nanomaterials.

Scientists Speak on Tiny Topic
Over 250 people
attended the Center's first public event on May 21. Offered free and open
to the public, the Symposium on Emerging Nanoscale Molecule Based Science
and Technology celebrated the newly established Institute for Nanotechnology,
and Center for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly, as well as
honoring Morrison Professors Joseph Hupp and Mark Ratner. The audience
included researchers, scientists and students from around the country
who converged at Northwestern's Evanston campus to hear talks by some
of the leaders in the new field of nanotechnology.
Speakers included:
Richard Smalley (Nobel laureate, Rice University), George Whitesides (Harvard),
Angela Belcher (UT/Austin), Richard Colton (NRL), Josephy Hupp (Morrison
Professor, NU) and Mark Ratner (Morrison Professor, NU). The event was
chaired by Tobin Marks and Samuel Stupp, and Dean Eric Sundquist concluded
the event with the presentation of medals for the Morrison Professors.
"We
were very pleased with the outcome of the event," stated Institute
and Center Director, Chad Mirkin. "The level of participation from
industry, academia, and national laboratories was exceptional, and there
were ample opportunities for informal discussion."
The Symposium was
sponsored by Northwestern University, Institute for Nanotechnology, Office
of the Vice President for Research, Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College
of Arts and Science, ThermoMicroscopes, and Veeco Metrology Group/Digital
Instruments.
The Center plans to
organize a lecture series on nanoscience and technology issues in the
coming year.
DuPont
Joins Industrial Affiliates Program
DuPont
Central Research and Development has joined in a partnership with the
Center for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly to further research
in nanotechnology, and becomes the first member of the Center's Industrial
Affiliates Program (IAP). As a member of the IAP program, DuPont will
benefit from ongoing multi-level interaction with faculty, staff, and
students. They will gain exposure to a broad spectrum of applications,
and interact with a pool of highly talented, well-educated potential employees.
DuPont's Research Manager, Dr. Timothy Gierke will also be a member of
the Center's Board of Technical Directors and provide input and advice
on future research directions.
"We
are honored to have DuPont as part of our Industrial Affiliates Program,"
said Chad Mirkin, "and we look forward to working closely with them
in the development of this exciting field."
